I ride because it’s real. We all live in an increasingly reality-free world. We listen to manufactured music made in music factories by music-making robots. We meet our friends on facebook instead of face to face. We move from our centrally heated houses to our air-conditioned offices and back again and have to check the internet to see what the weathers been doing outside all day. We don’t travel, we watch other people travel on our digital TV’s. We drive our air-conditioned cars with our digitally manufactured music turned up so loud we forget that the real world exists outside… “sorry mate, i didn’t realise you existed”
But riding a bike is real. When it rains you get really wet, when the sun shines you get really hot. To go round a corner you have to shift your body and balance the machine. Make a mistake and it really hurts. No seatbelt. No airbags. And you really might die. That’s part of it for sure. if i go for a few days without riding, I lose grip on reality. That’s whats kept me riding for so long… and will keep more riding for much longer.
